Put Experience on Your Side

Why I am Running for City Council

I am running for Council because I want to represent your views and your voice on Council to develop the future for our community.  I want to bring my record of proven leadership, accountability, fiscal responsibility and a true customer service mentality so future generations of our City benefit.  I want to help focus on the priorities facing our City.  I have the experience working with a diverse governing body as well as balancing a large budget while seeing positive outcomes.  I can “hit the ground running” immediately and be your proactive voice based on my past leadership experience.  As Henry Ford said, “You cannot build a reputation on what you’re going to do.”

Flooding

Houston has unfortunately seen a multitude of flooding over the years and conversations have occurred as to how to mitigate this issue and address our outdated infrastructure.  It is unfortunate that Harvey, affecting so many of our citizens, was a wake-up call for action.  We must undertake collaborative efforts with the County, State and community to help protect us from future disasters.  I have proven leadership spearheading collaborative efforts that led to positive outcomes for our community.

Public Safety

For 12 years, while serving over 200,000 students, their families and taxpayers as an HISD Board member, I have continually lived and acted with the notion of “Safety Above All Else.”  Despite ever challenging budgets in HISD, I ensured we invested in our police force.  With proven leadership, I will continue to focus on public safety.  With the passage of Proposition B, it is imperative to have a leader that has worked with large municipal budgets and not sacrifice our critical services.

Infrastructure

“Pay as you go, rebuild our streets, fix drainage problem and create jobs” was the campaign ad 8 years ago. Fast forward to today: we have paid $800 million to the City in new fees, yet spending on streets and drainage has gone down by an average of 6%! Fees go up and services go down.  While on the Board of HISD, I led an initiative to implement a pay as you go plan without additional taxes or fees that went to critical needs of aging schools.  With proven leadership, I will ensure these funds are dedicated to rebuilding our aging infrastructure and I will make sure the City focuses on this core function.

Economic Development

Houston has been fortunate to be a beacon for many business opportunities.  With our budget challenges and aging infrastructure, we cannot afford to lose sight of continuing to improve Houston as a world-class city.  It is often said, “So goes our schools, so goes our City.”  With proven leadership, I helped focus on building career pathways for students and on collaborating and aligning those with our most needed job opportunities.  I will continue to focus strategically and to collaborate to make sure Houston continues to maintain a climate of business prosperity.

Responsible Government

Last May, City Hall approved a nearly $5 billion budget with a $114 million deficit.  While the City utilized a one-time revenue source to cover this deficit, this lack of a structurally balanced budget points to a lack of strategic focus.  Expenses have outpaced revenue. The City should prioritize and strategically focus on its core services - as each of us must do in our own lives.  Serving on the HISD Board, I saw more challenging budgets each year, but due to strategic focus and proven leadership, achievement levels and graduation rates increased.  I will bring business sense and experience to help focus on the priorities facing the City.
